9 August, 2022

Indielab Games, the games industry accelerator company deeply committed to supporting the UK’s next generation of games businesses and the evolution of the industry, has today opened the application process for the Indielab South Yorks Games Accelerators. These two programmes, which will support Games developers and Games Tech providers across South Yorkshire, will be delivered in partnership with TEAM SY, a project part-financed by the European Union’s European Regional Development Fund and delivered in partnership with Barnsley Council and Capital Enterprise.

Additional support for the Indielab South Yorks Games Accelerators comes from the Screen Industries Growth Network, using public funding by Research England, part of UK Research and Innovation. SIGN, based at the University of York, is providing funding for two of the accelerators’ modules. The sponsors of the accelerators include Barclays Bank PLC and Harbottle & Lewis LLP; Harbottle will offer one-to-one consultations to the accelerators’ participating companies.

The application process is open to all early and mid-stage games developers & tech companies who are headquartered in South Yorkshire. The programme has been designed to facilitate and accelerate the growth of South Yorkshire’s burgeoning games sector. It will support the region’s pool of innovative games and tech developers by helping them to leverage their value proposition, fine-tune their business vision and explore specific growth opportunities.

Laura Bennett, Programme Lead and Super Connecter at TEAM SY said: “We are very excited to be partnering with Indielab Games to deliver two targeted Games Accelerator programmes for the SY region. Yorkshire’s digital industry continues to grow rapidly and TEAM SY is committed to providing the knowledge, support and expertise to enable start-ups and SMEs in the region to succeed.”

Curated in partnership with industry leaders from key organisations across the games sector, Indielab South York’s Games Accelerators will include masterclasses delivered by experts, including well-respected industry facilitators Oscar Clark and Ella Romanos, and speakers drawn from across the publishing, platform, streaming, investment, legal and financial sectors, including founders of leading games studios.

Funded by the TEAM SY project, the South Yorks Games Accelerators will be produced by Indielab Games who specialise in delivering growth accelerators for content creators. Since its foundation in 2015, Indielab’s programmes have been attended by more than 200 creative entrepreneurs, delivering on average an increase in growth of £450k per company across the following 18 months.

The Indielab South Yorks Games Accelerators will commence in October 2022 and will include masterclasses and seminars from industry leaders to help cohort companies to consolidate fundamental areas which drive decision making.  Participants will be provided with a bespoke growth programme and expert advice on the key success factors for business growth and will address a range of areas, including a focus on routes to market, forecasting models, innovation and creative leadership, investment readiness and pitching to win. A focused investment-readiness strand will culminate in an investor pitch, for project investment or equity, open to all participants – an event that has historically delivered a 20% conversion rate across the Indielab’s cohorts, delivering numerous investment deals for creative businesses.

Victoria Powell, Indielab Games’ founder and programme director, said: “We’re really excited about enabling this growth for the games sector in South Yorkshire and working with partners from across the industry to help supercharge the potential of the region’s local studios. South Yorks is home to one of the UK’s top 10 games hubs and it’s a sector that’s growing rapidly. However, the picture for small developers is tough and there’s a real need to support emerging studios. For the region’s games companies, this is a fantastic opportunity to access masterclasses, seminars, contacts and market insight that will really help them grow their businesses.”

Feedback from cohorts who attended the Indielab Games West Yorkshire 2022 programme was unanimously positive. Andrew Crawshaw, founder of Thunkd commented “No matter how much you think you already know, the added value that you will receive from Indielab is priceless.” Whilst Nina Roussakoff, founder of Lovewish Games said “If you want to grow your games business, this is the place to be!”

The UK market for video games reached a record figure of £7.16bn in 2021 – an increase of +1.90% from the previous record of £7bn in 2020. Ukie’s annual games market valuation shows the consumer game software market was valued at £4.28bn in 2021. This means that spend declined by 6.32% in comparison to 2020 but has grown 11.4% in comparison to a £3.84bn total from revised 2019 figures. Game hardware saw a record year, with consumers kitting themselves up with new consoles, accessories and upgraded PC game components, driving hardware revenues up a further +17.4% year on year to reach £2.66bn in 2021.
