Representatives from online gaming and community firm Xfire, Inc. have announced that their proprietary PC gaming chat/IM application Xfire is now used by over three million registered users in 100 different countries. The free service and software allows users to see when friends are online, join online games and meet other gamers of similar skill levels.
The latest version of the software includes a friends list, a one-click method for joining games and voice chat over a private peer-to-peer chat network. Other features include stats tracking for player profiles, file downloads for demos, patches and trailers and in-game messaging. As well as the Xfire software, the company also organizes online gaming events in the U.S. and Europe.
"We launched Xfire less than two years ago, and we have watched the community grow at an exponential rate," said Mike Cassidy, CEO of Xfire. "It took us one year to reach our first million users, eight months to reach our second million, and five months to reach our third million. And our passionate users now run Xfire an average of 88 hours per month each."
The company’s management includes Mike Cassidy (former CEO of Direct Hit), Chris Kirmse (co-creator of Meridian 59
), Adam Boyden and Dennis "Thresh" Fong (World Champion of Quake
). Its revenue stream is currently based entirely on advertising, as the company promotes its access to 18-34 males to marketers that have included Pepsi, Dodge, Unilever, Electronic Arts and Fox Studios.
