After a relatively lukewarm reception in Japan, Sony officials have decided to delay the release of the PSX multimedia device in the US and Europe. The DVD burner/entertainment system will now not see a Western release until “sometime during 2005”, although probably before the end of the company’s financial year in March. Sony officials claim the delay is to allow time to add more features to the machine to make it “more appealing to its customers in the two regions”. There’s no indication what these new features will be, but they are expected to include MP3 and DVD-RW compatibility. At the same time the company has revealed that the firmware update in Japan has been postponed from 15th July to 3rd August. The update will allow existing owners of the PSX to improve the functionality of the device through the Internet or via an update disc – this should include features such as DVD menu creation, add-on dubbing to DVD-RW and chapter editing.
