Officials from French publisher and developer Ubisoft have announced that the company is planning to release a new title in the
Heroes of Might and Magic franchise with the web-based
Heroes of Might and Magic Kingdoms due for worldwide launch in spring 2008.
Ubisoft says
Kingdoms is a strategy game set in a persistent heroic-fantasy, where "thousands of players will be able to rule their virtual kingdoms, lead gigantic armies against each other, master the trades or create legendary heroes."
The title promises to be entirely web based, requiring "no download or installation, only an Internet connection," and playable in any amount "from 10 minutes to multiple-hour sessions."
Beta test keys are included in copies of
Heroes of Might and Magic: Complete Edition, which ships today, or interested parties can register at the
official website.
“This is a new type of game for Ubisoft, one that allows you to jump into a rich and complex universe just with your Web browser,” said Serge Hascoët, Ubisoft’s chief creative officer. “
Heroes of Might and Magic Kingdoms will open a wide door to the Might and Magic universe, allowing players to immerse themselves within it unlike ever before.”
[UPDATE: This story originally reported that
Heroes of Might and Magic Kingdoms was related to
Heroes Of Might And Magic Online, an MMO developed in China for that market only, and has since been updated and corrected. Gamasutra regrets the error.
