Independent game developer Telltale Games has announced a publishing partnership with niche adventure game publisher The Adventure Company to bring the complete "season" of six serialized Sam & Max
PC adventure titles to retail worldwide this August.
Currently available in episodic chunks for download from the subscription-based game distribution network GameTap, as well as directly from Telltale Games' website, Sam & Max
is based upon the independent comics created by Steve Purcell. The first four episodes are currently available for download, with the next two scheduled to follow in the lead up to the retail release of Sam & Max: Season 1
Interestingly, this news follows a report
in September 2006 which revealed that Telltale Games was in talks with Nintendo concerning the possibility of bringing Sam & Max
to the Wii, an announcement that came following strong fan support to bring the episodic series Nintendo's latest console. The status of these talks, or any possible impact that today's news has on the possibility of bringing Sam & Max
to the Wii remain unclear.
Fans of point-and-click adventure games no doubt recall fondly 1993's Sam & Max Hit the Road
from LucasArts as one of the premier titles of the day, with a planned follow up unfortunately canceled in 2004. However, following this, the series was again given new life in October 2006 with the release of Sam & Max Episode 1: Culture Shock
“We are absolutely thrilled to be working with Telltale and the Sam & Max franchise,” said Richard Wah Kan, president and CEO of The Adventure Company. “With such a rich history behind the Sam & Max name and the tremendous following of ardent Sam & Max
fans, we’re proud to play a part in the rebirth of such a legendary franchise.”
