In a streaming video webcast to be broadcast in association with Gamasutra on Tuesday, August 19th, HP and Intel are hosting a talk given by 'serious games' expert Peter Smith, discussing the state of games with social or educational messages, and profiling the educational MMOG Lunar Quest. Smith, who is a Research Associate at the University of Central Florida's Institute for Simulation and Training, is currently working on multiple proejcts, including Lunar Quest, which is described as "...a National Science Foundation-funded project that seeks to examine the effectiveness of a massively multiplayer game for teaching introductory physics." Also speaking on the webcast will be John Newman, who currently works with U.S. Military Simulation and Training accounts as a Workstation Specialist for HP. According to the information for this sponsored webcast: "In this live webinar, Peter Smith, a Serious Games researcher, will provide an overview of the Serious Games industry and the Taxonomy of Serious Games. He will then delve into a specific case study of a Serious Game, the educational MMOG Lunar Quest, and the underlying technology used to build it." The discussion will be followed by a live Q&A, allowing Gamasutra readers to quiz Smith on aspects of the educational MMO's development and the state of serious games.
