Officials from Sony have announced that new versions of the company’s multimedia PSX console are to be released in Japan from the beginning of July. The newly revamped units will not feature any hardware changes but instead concentrate on a significant software overhaul. New features to be added, some of which were originally planned for the original launch last year, include additional options for recording quality and the ability to select audio channels when dubbing to a DVD - thereby improving compatibility with other DVD players. There will also be an option to create interactive menus when burning a DVD and to split recorded footage into chapters. Other changes include the ability to browse pages on the PlayStation BB broadband service and a number of bug fixes. Existing PSX owners will be able to add all these new features via a firmware update. The new versions of the PSX are expected to be the same as those that will be launched in the US and Europe, although no firm release date for a launch outside Japan has yet been announced.
