Sony Electronics has announced the PEG-UX50 CLIÉ PalmOS-based PDA, with a slew of sophisticated multimedia features. Although there are no features in this model designed specifically for supporting games, the device uses a new Sony microprocessor (the “Handheld Engine”) designed to support sophisticated multimedia—including an “integrated digital camera, voice recorder, digital audio player and high-resolution color screen”—as well as support for OpenGL. Of course the unit also supports IrDA, Bluetooth, and WiFi. The inclusion of OpenGL could signal a future CLIÉ that includes gamepad controls, enabling it to function not only for audio/video recording and playback, but as an alternative to dedicated handheld game devices, for those who would prefer to carry just one device.
