Sony Calls For Cheaper Broadband

SCEA president Kaz Hirari has told an American senate body that cheaper and more widespread broadband access is essential if next-generation consoles are to reach their full potential. "For the next generation console," argued Hirari. "Online is going to be like air conditioning in a car. You're going to need it." Whether intentionally or not the metaphor was well chosen since air conditioning in a car is not quite so ubiquitous in Europe as it is in the US and Japan and yet European broadband access is generally cheaper and more widespread. Hirari’s comments are the strongest indication yet that Sony consider broadband connectivity to be the top priority for new consoles and is a clear hint that the PlayStation 3 will include such features as standard.
