Turner-owned Cartoon Network commissioned Beijing-based studio SinoTech to develop casual online games based on both Cartoon Network and SinoTech characters.
With the deal, SinoTech plans to develop two online games each month for Cartoon Network's regional site and localized site in Taiwan, potentially showing up on Cartoon Network's other Asian sites in the future as well.
The Chinese developer also secured exclusive rights to develop advertising opportunities, such as banner ads and search engine marketing, around its games. Cartoon Networks hopes that this partnership will eventually attract more local advertisers.
“Our focus for most of the year has been looking at South Asia, because our business there is quite strong,” says Turner Entertainment Networks Asia's Interactive Media director Benjamin Grubbs, according to a report
from Asia Media Journal.
He continues, "In the year to date, we haven’t had any focus on the mainland China market -- this is more of an initial step to start entertaining advertising from marketers in mainland China that are interested in the kids online media space."
Cartoon Network has also previously partnered with Seoul, Korea-based Grigon Entertainment (Canhel Online
) for the development of its upcoming MMO also starring the cable channel's cartoon characters, Cartoon Network Universe: FusionFall
