In an interview with the Mercury News, new Microsoft Game Studios general manger, Shane Kim, has defended recent staff cuts, which have seen the total number of internal employees drop from 1,200 to around 1,000. Kim has insisted that the cutbacks should not be interpreted as a retreat and that the move was simply a response to a wider range of support from third party developers, which in turn means that the company no longer needs to create so many first party titles itself. “This is about us growing up,'' Kim says. “At the end of the day we'll have more quality.''
