Reports have begun to emerge that Sega is preparing to deliver a new arcade system at the beginning of next year, using technology from British technology firm Imagination.
The same company, which owns the PowerVR brand of graphic accelerator technology, supplied Sega for projects including the Dreamcast and the Naomi arcade systems.
The new arcade system would be the first new technology from Sega since the Dreamcast based Naomi boards, with the company currently relying on the Xbox-based Chihiro boards.
The move towards new technology is not a surprise considering Sammy president, and now Sega chairman, Hajime Satomi’s desire to see the stalwart publisher concentrate on its arcade business. This is, however, the first suggestion that Sammy’s Atomiswave platform will not be the sole focus of Sega’s future arcade development.
