Sega.com has signed two separate middleware agreements with Sony and Nintendo, making the Sega Network Application Package (SNAP) an authorized development tool for the PS2 and Gamecube. SNAP is a suite of technologies and services that allows developers to incorporate networked gameplay into titles. It includes community building tools and a custom network transport optimized for gameplay, provides secure user authentication, and supports revenue collection with various billing systems. Reporting technologies enable ladders, tournaments, rankings, and other stats-based activities.
Optional SNAP Services can be purchased by game developers, to help operate, maintain, and further develop games. Various options can be ordered for server hosting, billing, consulting, and quality assurance testing.
SNAP licensing terms were not disclosed.
