Yakuza creator Toshihiro Nagoshi's next project has been revealed as Binary Domain, a new squad-based third-person shooter set in a futuristic, run-down Tokyo where humans fight off invading robots, Sega announced today. A message on the game's official web site confirms that the team behind Yakuza is working on the new game, which will explore the quickly eroding differences between humans and machines. "The most distinctive way of differentiating a creature from a machine is 'life.'" Nagohsi writes. "However, we also know that machines can be given a form of life when created by man. Is it possible that the differentiation is becoming less clear and machines are actually becoming more like humans?" In announcing the game, Nagoshi said he was aiming to create a product that "will be accepted by both the Japanese and Western markets," with a "deep, human drama" that stands in contrast to the usual clinical sci-fi backdrop. Nagoshi's Yakuza series, which focuses on the eponymous Japanese organized crime syndicate, has been a consistent best-seller in Japan. The PlayStation exclusive series has helped drive sales for Sony's systems in Japan, though the series has found only niche success in the West. Binary Domain will be released on the Xbox 360 as well as the PS3, Sega said. Nagoshi was also director of several games in the Super Monkey Ball series, and has worked on recent releases in the Sonic the Hedgehog series.
