Veteran video game information and documentation resource MobyGames has been acquired by game-rental service GameFly, according to information in the site's footer. Though the move hasn't been formally announced, the GameFly Media logo now appears at the bottom of the MobyGames site. GameFly's main focus remains its mail-based video game rentals and sales, though the company acquired game news site Shacknews in early 2009. Later that year, the company hired veteran 1UP journalist Garnett Lee to head up the site and network, which also includes Flash game site Ponged.com, game cheats site CheatFreak.com, and now apparently also MobyGames. Since its founding in 1999, MobyGames has amassed a database of over 33,000 games, comprising information including developer credits, screenshots, trivia, release dates, platforms and aggregated reviews. The site relies on contributions from users, though a group of volunteer approvers vet all submissions. This month, GameFly filed for its first public stock offering since its 2002 founding. Gamasutra has reached out to both MobyGames and GameFly for additional information on the apparent ownership change, and will update this story if comment is given.
