Report: FCC Filing Shows 3DS Test Kit

A new filing with the Federal Communications Commission appears to reveal a testing board for the upcoming Nintendo 3DS handheld that suggests a widescreen 3D display opposing a traditional 4:3 one. Images in the filing, first discovered by tech site Wireless Goodness, show the two screens installed in the sort of large motherboard commonly employed to facilitate testing. The board has all the components of a Nintendo DSi -- the top and bottom screens, a camera, antenna and controller and so forth. According to reports, the purpose of a FCC filing such as this one is to earn approval in the U.S. for the device's WLAN card -- Mitsumi, maker of the card, is the one who submitted it. The hardware also shows an input for DS cartridges. Although little has been revealed to date on the new portable, Nintendo says it will support 3D without the need for special glasses. According to comments from the Digital Foundry blog, images in the filing appear to suggest that while the top visual screen will support 3D, the bottom touch screen will be traditional.
Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has also assured that for those who have difficulty with 3D or are concerned about their vision, the device will include the ability to "at all times play with [the 3D feature] off."
