Reactor, a new motion-capture solution developed in the UK and marketed by Ascension Technologies, is making its way into a commercial release. Reactor is an active marker optical motion capture system. It's real-time, untethered, and works anywhere. The system works by having small discs covered with infrared LEDs attached to significant points on a performer's body, which flash at 900 cycles per second, transmitting position to a receiver. Reactor's sensing system is an open cube framework, about 3 meters on a side, where each bar of the frame contains active sensing electronics that handle the optical processing with 480 electronic cameras. There are no lenses and therefore no camera/lens systems to calibrate and mathematically model. In addition, the system is immune to magnetic interference. Ascension's base price for the system is $75,000 USD with 30 sensors and a 3-meter framework of sensing bars.
