PSP Still Leads As Japanese Hardware Sales Fall

The PSP has remained the best selling console of the week in Japan, despite a fall in sales for all consoles in the wake of Golden Week, as a total lack of new releases within the top fifty software charts also adversely affects results.
Market research firm Media Create has revealed data for weekly hardware sales in Japan for the week ending May 11th, following details of the software top thirty. With very little movement in the software charts, and not a single new release in the entire top fifty, there has been no change in the hardware sales hierarchy with the PSP still the best selling console of the week. However, sales of Sony’s portable were down 11,000 units to 89,884. Wii sales fell by around 8,000 units, with the home console remaining in second place with a total of 67,308. Sales of the Nintendo DS fell by only a little over 1,000 units to a weekly total of 51,228. PlayStation 3 sales fell by over 2,000 units to 8,054, while the PlayStation 2 was down over 1,000 units to 7,464. Xbox 360 sales fell by a few hundred units to 1,298 for the week. Overall in the top fifty there were thirty-two titles for the Nintendo DS, eleven for the Wii, three for the PSP, two each for the PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 3 and none for the Xbox 360.
