Over 5 million PlayStation 3 consoles have been sold in Japan to date, says new data from Famitsu publisher Enterbrain.
The console launched in Japan in November 2006, but the data,
translated by consumer weblog Kotaku, shows that the console's top-selling games are fairly new. The PS3's best selling title in Japan is
Final Fantasy XIII, which launched in the country in December 2009 and has since sold 1.8 million copies. In Japan, the game is a PS3 exclusive, whereas it launched on both PS3 and Xbox 360 in the West.
Konami's
Metal Gear Solid 4, which launched in June 2008, comes in second on the software list with 706,461 copies, and
Yakuza 4, which just launched in March 2010, has already become the platform's third-best selling game in Japan with 526,093 copies sold so far.
Recent Enterbrain data
showed 1.9 million PS3 consoles sold during fiscal 2009. Japan's most successful hardware platform to date remains Nintendo's DS, with over 30 million units sold as of the end of fiscal 2009. The PSP had over 14 million, and the Wii more than 10 million.
In contrast, the Xbox 360 has sold just over 1.3 million units in Japan as of the end of fiscal 2009.
