In a statement on its website, organizers of the the Cyberathlete Professional League (CPL) have announced that effective immediately all operations have been ceased and all events currently scheduled for 2008 have been canceled. The organization blamed "the current fragmentation of the sport, a crowded field of competing leagues, and the current economic climate" on the suspension of its tournaments. A special note promised that all 2007 prizes would continue to be paid. CPL notes that its tournaments have been running for over a decade and growing each year "commencing with a small LAN event in Dallas, Texas, and culminating in world-class competitions across five continents." Last year the league had partnered with publisher Sierra for an eight month tour starting in Verona, Italy, featuring Sierra's F.E.A.R. and World in Conflict.
