Interactive Data Visualization (IDV) has announced that its popular foliage middleware SpeedTreeRT has been licensed for use in several new titles, including next-generation offerings form Atari, Vivendi, 10tacle, Massive, Emergent, and more. SpeedTreeRT delivers low-poly, highly detailed trees and plants, with adjustable wind effects, seamless LOD transitions, and a library of hundreds of tree models from more than 100 species. Games recently announced to take advantage of SpeedTreeRT include Obsidian's Neverwinter Nights 2, Massive Entertainment's World in Conflict, Novarama's Fallen Lords: Condemnation, 10tacle's Elveon, and an unnamed title in development by Secret Lair Studios. The technology will also be utilized by Emergent Game Technologies for use in a combat simulation in development for the U.S. Department of Defense. SpeedTreeRT has already been used in the development of other recent titles such as Project Gotham Racing 3, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, and Tiger Woods PGA Tour 06. “We licensed SpeedTree because our focus is to make great games – and to use the best tools available to make them better and faster,” said Jason Robar, vice president of Worldwide Studios at Secret Lair. “Licensing SpeedTree was an easy decision to make. Especially considering that SpeedTree is a BigWorld tool partner, the integration is now seamless.” In addition, massively multiplayer online game (MMOG) development firm BigWorld has announced that the company has agreed to integrate SpeedTreeRT within its BigWorld Technology Suite, which provides operators and studios a lower total cost of ownership through a seamless, integrated development pipeline that is optimized for the development of MMOGs. John De Margheriti, CEO of BigWorld, commented, “SpeedTree is easily the best of breed procedural foliage system. It makes MMO development faster while also helping game environments look richer and more immersive.” Kevin Meredith, Director of Business Development at IDV added, “Our integration with BigWorld Technology Suite ensures that customers of this comprehensive game development platform now have the option of easily including real-time’s most advanced tree and plant solution. We look forward to partnering with BigWorld in delivering an outstanding look and feel to the greatest MMOGs of the next generation.”
