Middleware firm Kynogon has announced that its AI middleware solution Kynapse has been licensed by Sega to be used in the development of Sonic the Hedgehog for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. The game, which is set to ship this fall, will mark Sonic's first appearance on next-gen consoles. Kynapse 4.0, the software's latest version, includes specific features for next-generation platforms, including hierarchical 3D pathfinding compatible with streaming mechanisms, 3D dynamic pathfinding for full physics games, automatic 3D perception and pathfinding data generation supporting very large maps, 3D topology dynamic analysis, team coordination mechanisms, and AI architecture with high level performance. “We are very proud to be working with Sega on an icon title like Sonic for next generation platforms”, said Pierre Pontevia, CEO for Kynogon. “As one of the true leaders of the industry, Sega sets the tone for game development. It is a great opportunity and a true recognition for Kynogon to work on a next generation title with them.” Kynogon's Kynapse has been or is being used in the development of several other current and next-generation titles as well, by companies such as Electronic Arts, Atari, Real Time Worlds, Lionhead Studios, Pyro Studios, Majesco, and Artificial Mind & Movement.
