PlayStation 3 Blu-Ray 3D Update Delayed To October

Sony's previously announced firmware update which will add Blu-ray 3D functionality to the PlayStation 3 has been delayed to October, according to official comments.
Sony made an announcement today at the International Franchise Association Trade Show in Berlin that the PlayStation 3 firmware update that will allow users to watch Blu-ray movies in steroscopic 3D has been pushed back to October, according to consumer weblog Engadget. CEO Howard Stringer did not provide a specific date in October for the release of the update, which was originally scheduled to launch this month, and first announced in January of this year at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Future updates will also allow the PlayStation 3 to use 3D rendering capabilities for photos and playback of 3D YouTube videos and HDTV/DVR add on unit PlayTV's broadcasts, according to Sony. The addition of these capabilities to the PlayStation 3 could substantially boost 3D adoption by exposing PS3's 54 million registered users to the content. Stringer also confirmed that Spider-Man 3, Avatar and Green Hornet would all be released in the 3D Blu-ray format in the future. Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland and Michael Jackson's This Is It are also to be released shortly.
