According to internal Sony figures sales of the PlayStation 2 console are expected to drop by 30%, compared to the 2003/04 financial year. In the previous financial year the company shipped 20.1 million consoles world-wide, but this year the figure is expected to be only 14 million. The company also expects combined sales of game software to drop from 254 million units to 250 million in the next financial year. Such drops are largely expected at this point in the format’s lifespan, with the 14 million units expected to ship this year still greater than the total world-wide Xbox sales to date. In related news Reuters has reported that Sony intends to ship 3 million units of the PlayStation Portable (PSP) by the end of March 2005. This implies that the portable console is still on schedule to be released in Japan at the end of this year and in the US and Europe at the beginning of 2005. Source: Computer & Video Games
