Philips Electronics, Europe's largest consumer electronics and lighting manufacturer, has announced that its Optical Storage Group will be supplying the DVD drive for Microsoft's Xbox.
In a statement, Philips said that Microsoft chose their drive because they would be able to get the device into volume production in the short timeframe Microsoft demanded for the console, which is scheduled to launch November 8. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Microsoft is planning to sell a separate remote device for roughly $30 which will enable DVD playback on the Xbox.
