Denmark-based game developer and tool provider OverTheEdge has announced the release of V1.1 of Unity, its 3D game engine and game editor. The Unity tool itself is available for Mac OS X, but allows Mac executables, Windows executables, and browser versions to be created in a single action from the same tool. The engine features extensible graphics, particle effects, highly optimized scripting, the Ageia physX Engine, skinned character animation and ragdoll effects, and is already being used to produce games including GooBall, published for Mac by Ambrosia Software, and in universities such as the Parsons School of Design in New York. New features for V1.1 include a 30 page scripting tutorial, greatly expanded documentation, a new C/C++ plug-in SDK to interface with any hardware or software Unity doesn't support out of the box, improved game workflow, and support for asynchronous internet access in an easy-to-use API. "Casual games on multiple platforms are predicted to be a $2bn business by 2008. What the casual revolution needs most is not huge art teams, but creative individuals with clever, different, wacky ideas. With Unity, creative teams can develop on their beloved Macs with the best workflow and tools available on the market," says OTEE CEO David Helgason.
