Cybernet Systems has joined Sony's middleware program, which means that Cybernet's OpenSkies massively multiplayer network engine will be available to licensed PS2 developers. Previously available only to PC game developers, OpenSkies supports thousands of simultaneous players by connecting to distributed servers which direct real-time data requests and cull the data to reduce bandwidth and minimize redundancy. The network engine is already available with a Linux port, and the company says that it is planning to support Mac OS X.
