Developer Red Eagle Games is getting some help in its development of games based on author Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time books: The experienced RPG devs at Obsidian Entertainment will be collaborating. The two companies today announced they've struck a services agreement through which Obsidian will support Red Eagle on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC titles. Explains Red Eagle COO Larry Mondragon: "Although Red Eagle Games is both a game producer and publisher, as a new company, we quickly recognized that we could benefit from supplementing small in-house technical and creative teams with a proven third-party developer." Mondragon calls the alliance a "perfect fit," and says it should result in higher-quality, faster-to-market games at lower cost. Red Eagle CEO Rick Selvage notes that Obsidian -- comprised of many veterans of original Fallout developer Black Isle -- in particular offers useful storytelling experience. The Obsidian team also did Knights of the Old Republic II and is at work on upcoming Sega RPG Alpha Protocol. "Obsidian Entertainment is the ideal development partner to help Red Eagle Games take Jordan's beloved characters from the printed page to exciting new forms of interactive media," says Selvage. Obsidian CEO Feargus Urquhart sees "incredible gaming possibilities" in the partnership. Adds the studio's chief creative officer, Chris Avellone: "Games set in Robert Jordan's universe have the chance to deliver on the epic storylines and the complex characters that the series is known for - and this is one of Obsidian's strengths. It's a natural fit." Red Eagle has already teamed up with screenwriting vet Chris Morgan, who's done films like Cellular, Wanted, and the film adaptation of Gears of War, for support on the games as well. Selvage and Mondragon launched Red Eagle in 2008 expressly to create Wheel of Time products. They are producing a Universal Pictures feature film based on Wheel of Time in addition to the stand-alone video games in development "for all major video game platforms," from consoles and PC to mobile devices. The Malibu-based company also has a distribution deal with EA Partners for the game, and is also planning an MMO.
