Nvidia has announced GPU Gems 3, the latest book in its programming series designed for "software developers and scientific researchers who want to exploit the immense parallel processing power of the GPU," released this week at SIGGRAPH in San Diego. Nvidia says the techniques described in the book helps game developers "create ultra-realistic characters, better lighting, and post-rendering compositing effects," as well as enables non-graphics applications like "physics simulation, financial analysis, and even virus detection—particularly when coupled with the new NVIDIA CUDA programming architecture." The 1000 page hardcover book includes contributions from more than 20 companies including Apple, Crytek, Electronic Arts, Microsoft Research, Infinity Ward, Sega and Nvidia itself, as well as academic contributions from Cornell University, Dartmouth College, Imperial College of London, the University of Illinois and the University of Tokyo. Said Crytek lead graphics programmer, "“The GPU Gems series features a collection of the most essential algorithms required by next-generation 3D engines.”
