Nintendo's Wii has sold six million units in the UK since it launched there three years ago -- making it the fastest-selling console in that region's history.
Data from GfK-ChartTrack shows the Wii hit its milestone in the 48th week of the year, and that the mid-November launch of the black Wii gave sales their most recent push.
"Wii launched in December, 2006 and sold 185,000 in just a few weeks," said GfK-ChartTrack director Dorian Bloch, according to
UK trade site MCV. "In calendar year 2007, it sold 1.81 million – but really took off in 2008, with 2.73 million sold.
In its third year, Wii unit sales in the UK show some signs of slowing: "So far in 2009, it’s hit 1.31 million – but it’s got a few weeks to build on that before Christmas," adds Bloch.
Although these recent figures make Wii the fastest-selling console of all time, it's still got a great deal more units to move before it catches up with the best-selling console: Sony's PlayStation 2 has sold 10 million units in the UK to date.
