Nintendo Prevails In Another Wii Patent Suit

Nintendo says a U.S. District court judge has dismissed a lawsuit against it brought by Guardian Media Technologies, who had alleged that the Wii infringed on one of its patents. Nintendo had moved for summary judgment on the case, and received a dismissal from Los Angeles District Court Judge Manuel on June 8, which the company notes is six months after the initial suit. "We are very pleased with the Court’s decision," says Nintendo of America's senior VP of Legal and general counsel Rick Flamm. The success of the Wii and its remote-based motion control scheme has attracted numerous patent infringement claims from other technology companies. Most recently, Nintendo prevailed in a suit brought by Fenner Technologies regarding input ports, which was dismissed in March. Nintendo has also sued peripheral-maker Nyko for attempting to sell a device too similar to the Wii's Nunchuk; that case was settled late last year. "Nintendo vigorously defends patent lawsuits," Flamm said alongside today's announcement. "At the earliest stages of this case, Nintendo convinced the Court to dismiss this case as Guardian’s patent had nothing to do with Nintendo’s products."
