Nintendo DS Leads Japanese Charts, PSP Sales Take Sharp Decline

In the wake of the holiday season, the Nintendo DS jumped to the top of the Japanese charts, as PSP sales took a sharp decline, reports tracking firm Media Create.
For the first full week of the new year, the Nintendo DS jumped to the top of the Japanese charts, as PSP sales took a sharp decline, reports tracking firm Media Create. For the week ended January 9, the Nintendo DS line sold 87,118 units, with the DSi LL making up roughly half of those sales at 44,122 units sold. The DSi and DS Lite made up the remaining sales with 38,486 and 4,510 units sold, respectively. PSP sales dropped 70 percent, from 107,796 units sold last week to 32,841 units this week, though the platform's ever-popular Monster Hunter Freedom 3 continued to lead the software charts. The PlayStation 3 topped the individual platforms chart with 59,612 units sold, and the Wii took number two, selling 56,547 units. Nearly all platforms saw a decrease in sales, with the exception of the DS Lite, the Xbox 360, and the PS2, which maintained steady sales from last week. Below are the full sales rankings from Media Create for the week ended January 9, 2011. (The second chart lumps together sales of all models in a given line of hardware.
