Facebook integration officially comes to the Nintendo DSi today, allowing users to update their profiles on the social site via an online-connected DSi, another example of how game companies are evolving to meet expectations of community connectivity. At E3 in June, Nintendo said it would be adding Facebook Connect functionality to the DSi sometime this summer. On Monday, Nintendo confirmed it will be available later today at 5 p.m. PST as a free download for DSi. Facebook on DSi will take advantage of the handheld's cameras and storage space, as users will be able to transfer pictures from DSi to their Facebook profile, among other functions. "Facebook and Nintendo DSi build on the trend of personalization that is so important to consumers," said Nintendo of America EVP of sales and marketing Cammie Dunaway. "We’re giving people the tools to express themselves in creative new ways and show off the results to their friends and family on Facebook." Nintendo cited figures from research firm NPD Group, which said the DSi, launched in the US in April, has sold 1.7 million units in the country to date. Facebook is becoming increasingly prolific in the games space, as game companies are sprouting up to make titles for the "social games" space. Mass-market titles like Zynga's Mafia Wars and Texas HoldEm Poker, and PlayFish's Pet Society are popular Facebook games. Microsoft also promised upcoming Facebook integration with the Xbox Live network.
