Nintendo has announced that the NES retro-branded version of its latest Game Boy Micro handheld, already extremely popular in Japan, where the 'Famicom' color variant was an option at the September 13 Japanese hardware launch, is coming to the Western Hemisphere on November 28, part of celebrations to honor the 20th anniversary of the Nintendo Entertainment System.
The new Game Boy Micro base unit will be maroon with a gold NES-inspired faceplate, and will sell at an MSRP of $99.99 in North America. It also will come packed with a $10 coupon that can be used toward the purchase of select Nintendo-published Game Boy Advance games.
The Game Boy Micro, already launched in North America in basic form on September 19, is only 4 inches wide, 2 inches long and 0.7 inches thin, and weighs approximately 2.8 ounces. It has a backlit screen that is claimed to be even brighter and sharper than the Nintendo DS – although it is smaller than the SP at just 2 inches.
"The Special 20th Anniversary Edition Game Boy Micro is an anniversary present to millions of Nintendo fans, who 20 years ago single-handedly built this entire industry," says George Harrison, Nintendo of America's senior vice president of marketing and corporate communications.
