Nintendo officials have claimed victory in the December sales results, with a reported 70% increase on year-on-year figures. These results compare particularly favorably to the PlayStation 2, whose world-wide sales have fallen by 8% in the last two months of the year and by a massive 27% in North America.
Microsoft’s fortunes have been harder to gauge due to a lack of official sales figures but the company is claiming an improvement year-on-year – although this is only thought to be by a few percentage points.
It remains to be seen what effect these figures will have on the global installed user base, but pre-Christmas figures gave the GameCube a lead over the Xbox of around 100,000 units. Neither console has any chance of catching the PlayStation 2 though, which recently passed the 70 million shipments mark.
