THQ has announced that Team17's cult hit franchise
Worms will be hitting both the DS and PSP this summer with
Worms: Open Warfare 2, with both versions confirmed for full internet play.
Most recently seen on Xbox 360's Live Arcade, the newly announced handheld versions mark the latest in the popular turn-based strategy series born over a decade ago, and since ported to numerous platforms from Amiga, PC and Mac to other handhelds like the Game Boy Color and N-Gage, as well as nearly every major console.
The new versions of the game will include, in addition to the traditional multiplayer deathmatch mode, a number of single and multiplayer modes including "Rope Race, Fort, Puzzle and Campaign," which THQ says will require players to use new strategies to defeat enemies.
The game will also include a new "firing range" mode which lets players test their skills with all of the game's new and old weapons, including the new Bunker Buster and Buffalo of Lies, as well as standard favorites such as the Super Sheep, Concrete Donkey and the Holy Hand Grenade.
Online players will also be charted with daily updated stats and leaderboards via official
Worms website, and will see new in-depth customization options including custom landscape and team flag editors in addition to modified hats, tombstones and victory dances for their worm teams, similar to those seen in the Xbox Live Arcade version.
THQ expects the game will reach both platforms this summer.
