Microsoft has launched its new 64-bit version of Windows XP Professional at WinHec 2005, called Windows XP Professional x64 Edition. For game developers, according to Microsoft, 64-bit processors combined with Windows x64 optimized OS and server technologies deliver the freedom to create bigger, more realistic worlds. Tim Sweeney, CEO and Technical Director of Epic Games commented on 64-bit Windows: "The huge address space is perfect for large data sets and high-resolution game content, while the expanded register set and performance gains are a boost for real time applications." Microsoft points to increased virtual memory, now up to 16 terabytes, enabling developers to keep the entire world in memory all at once, as well as artists and modelers being able to take advantage of the additional memory space to make larger and more complex models, as two of the key advantages to Windows XP Professional x64 Edition. In addition, it was pointed out that gamers pushing the limits of their 4GB, 32-bit PC platforms will be able to take advantage of 128GB of memory in x64.
