Mark Wahlberg Confirms Role In David O. Russell Helmed Uncharted Movie

Max Payne movie star Mark Wahlberg said he will be starring in a long-planned film adaptation of Sony's Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, penned by writer/director David O. Russell. While Wahlberg didn't say in so many words that he would play lead character Nathan Drake in the film version, he told MTV that he would be "obviously in whatever David wants to do," and hinted that some big names are being sought to play his character's family in the movie. "The idea of it is so off the charts, with [Robert] Deniro being my father, [Joe] Pesci being my uncle," Wahlberg said. "It's not going to be the watered-down version, that's for sure." Drake's family has not been featured in either Uncharted game so far, suggesting the movie version may look further into the lead character's family background. Wahlberg said writer/director David O. Russell has already begun work on the screenplay, which he hopes will begin shooting this summer. Wahlberg and Russell previously collaborated on The Fighter, which opens in theaters next month. Word on an Uncharted movie project first leaked out last June, then under the guidance of Hitman movie scribe Kyle Ward. Uncharted 2 sold 3.5 million copies just months after its late 2009 release, becoming Sony's fastest-selling first-party title. The first title in the series sold a million copies in the 10 weeks following its 2007 launch. During his brief rapping career, Wahlberg starred in a Sega CD full-motion video game Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch: Make My Video, which was named one of the worst games of all time in a 2006 PC World list.
