Modo game graphics tool developer Luxology has announced a new agreement with Pixar to license the animation studio's proprietary subdivision surface patents that Luxology says will enhance yet-unspecified future products. The company says it has no further announcements as to when and where the patented technique will be incorporated into its software. It has also not released the terms of the agreement. Luxology recently released the "all systems grow" version 301 of its modo software, which improving the software's modeling, painting and rendering features, and added new capabilities including sculpting and item animation. Said Luxology president and co-founder Brad Peebler, “Pixar is not only an important client of Luxology’s, they are also a key source of technology for the computer graphics and entertainment industries. We are very excited to have clear rights to use some of the most fundamental SubDivision surface modeling and rendering algorithms on the planet.”
