Yorkshire-based game developer The Code Monkeys -- developer of games on platforms ranging from the ZX81 to the iPad -- is shutting down after nearly a quarter of a century, the company confirmed.
"On the Company's 23rd birthday (1st February 2011), the Directors/Shareholders of The Code Monkeys voted to cease trading," the studio
stated in an epitaph on its website. "It would've been nice to make the quarter century, but alas..."
The company was founded in 1988, and some of its founders' first games included
Hi Rise Hive and
Bug Burst for ZX81, the precursor to the Spectrum.
The Code Monkeys also developed games on Sega CD, PlayStation 1 and 2, Game Boy, Nintendo DS and other platforms.
Most recently, the company developed games for Apple's iPad, including
Triple Jumping Sports, Triple Running Sports, Triple Shot Sports and
Triple Throwing Sports.
The Code Monkeys also released iPhone games
Voodoo Charms and
Postman Pat, among others, and WiiWare titles in the
Triple ... Sports series as well as
Manic Monkey Mayhem.
In January last year, The Code Monkeys said it
made staff cuts in order to align headcount with product output. It was one of the oldest independent developers in the UK.
