Licensed Anime Titles Flourish In Slow Japanese Charts

Sales have continued to slow in the latest Japanese game charts, with a number of niche anime/manga licensed games taking advantage of the lack of big releases, and the Japanese release of Forza Motorsport 2 just missing out on a top ten place.
Sales have continued to slow in the latest Japanese video game charts, with even the highest ranked title barely managing to sell over 40,000 units. Such activity is not unusual at this time of year, though, and publishers have taken advantage of the situation by releasing a number of more niche titles. The highest selling game of the week, and the highest new entry, is Bandai Namco’s manga and anime license Kekkaishi: Karasumori Ayakashi Kidan for the Nintendo DS, with a little under 41,000 units sold. The second highest ranked title is also an anime license, with Sony’s fourth Bleach title for the PSP selling just under 38,000 units. The third placed title, with over 30,000 units sold, is again a manga license, this time of the popular four panel strip Lucky * Star. It is the second use of the license on the DS, the first game being a homework drill and mini-game collection. All of last week’s top three new entries (Shining Wind, Ouendan 2 and Odin Sphere) have dropped out of the top ten this week, with the only other unfamiliar face being new Nintendo DS puzzle game entry Kurikin: Nano Island Story at number eight, with under 21,000 units sold. Although the rest of the top thirty is, as normal, dominated by Nintendo DS games, Xbox 360 title Forza Motorsport 2 has just missed out on a top ten spot with a debut at number eleven. Other new entries include Pachinko Ultraman on PlayStation 2 at number fourteen and Medal of Honor: Vanguard on PlayStation 2 at number twenty-nine. There are no PlayStation 3 titles in the top thirty.
