April has proven to be a relatively busy month for new PC releases in North America, most prominent of which is NCsoft’s massively multiplayer online (MMO) title
Guild Wars, which enters straight in at number one in the latest NPD charts. The game’s success proves that, while many companies continue to have problems financing and developing new MMOs, a successful title can still justify the higher expense and effort when compared to a traditional offline title.
Doom 3 expansion pack
Resurrection of Evil is the second highest new entry of the month at number four, followed by Take-Two’s
Stronghold 2 – which has now become an unexpected hit on both sides of the Atlantic.
Other new entries just outside of the top ten include
SWAT 4 at number eleven,
Empire Earth II at number fifteen and
Lego Star Wars at number eighteen, showing that, while the PC may be suffering a paucity of big-name releases compared to years gone by, it still continues to be a significant format for many publishers and developers.
