The release of
Pro Evolution Soccer 6 (aka
Winning Eleven: Pro Evolution Soccer 2007) has seen Konami finally overtake Electronic Arts’
FIFA series as the most popular soccer action game in the UK. The game experienced more than 23 percent more sales than the recent
FIFA 07, despite being sold on significantly less formats.
Despite this, sales for the PlayStation 2 version were slightly below that for
Pro Evolution Soccer 5, with the difference being made up by the Xbox 360 version. Despite controversy over excised content, compared to the PlayStation 2 game, the Xbox 360 version recorded the highest first week sales of any 360 game so far in the UK – easily beating previous record holder
Dead Rising.
Electronic Arts easily held on to the second position in the charts though, thanks to the delayed release of the Xbox 360 version of
FIFA 07 (also criticized in reviews for containing less content than the current generation versions). The new release of the Xbox 360 version of
Tiger Woods PGA Tour 07, which has faced similar complaints, also raised the overall chart position of that title.
In spite of all the hype and controversy, Rockstar’s
Canis Canem Edit (aka
Bully) debuted only at position five. Despite the large number of new releases this week, it is the only other genuine new entry in the top ten.
Other new entries in the top forty include massively multiplayer online role-playing game
Guild Wars: Nightfall at number fifteen, quiz game
Buzz! Junior: Jungle Party at number twenty-one, karaoke game
SingStar Legends at twenty-four,
Mortal Kombat Armageddon at twenty-seven,
The Legend of Spyro: A New Beginning at number twenty-eight and
Dark Messiah of Might & Magic at number thirty-four.
