For the second time in three weeks, a pachinko simulator, Daito Giken Koushiki Pachi-Slot Simulator: Ossu! Banchou for PS2, has hit the number one spot in the Japanese sales charts. It beat D3 Publisher’s recent Evangelion tie-in by racking up 96,096 first week sales units - easily breaking the recently established record for the fastest ever selling PlayStation 2 pachinko game. The success of the game illustrates a current preference in Japan for non-traditional titles with Nintendo’s Daredemo Asobi Taizen – a collection of numerous simple card and board games – entering straight in at number two with 58,376 sales. It is joined in the top ten by no less than three brain training games, including Sega’s PSP variant, which reappears in the top ten following its initial release last month. It is by no means impossible for more traditional titles to still find success in Japan, though, with Capcom’s Beat Down: Fists of Vengeance performing well above expectations with 38,710 units sold and a 90 percent absorption rate. Wander to Kyozou (aka Shadow of the Colossus) has also performed well in its second week, with 27,079 units sold, although sales for the top 100 titles as a whole has slipped to 79 percent of the weekly average. In hardware sales, the results are almost identical to last week, with the Nintendo DS commanding a 40.39 percent market share with 48,520 sales. The PSP was next with a 24.47 percent market share and 29,395 sales, followed by the PlayStation 2 at 18.34 percent and 22,030 sales. The Game Boy Advance family of consoles was next with a 13.92 percent market share (Game Boy Micro: 9,349, Game Boy Advance SP: 7,089, Game Boy Advance: 284). The GameCube had a 2.74 percent share of the market, followed by the Xbox at 0.14 percent.
