Despite a 32 percent increase on last week’s figures (which were the worst in three and a half years), software sales this week in Japan are still only 49 percent of the weekly average, in what has proven to be another slow sales period in the country. Once again, the number one selling title failed to sell over 100,000 units, with Banpresto’s latest anime and manga license totaling only 79,498 sales. Sales of 42,509 were more remarkable for Nintendo’s DS Training For Adults: Work Your Brain title, which is not a game in the traditional sense but instead a series of mental workouts designed in co-operation with Touhoku University and based on a popular series of self-help books. This is the second title, after the hugely successful Nintendogs, primarily targeting non-gamers and seems again to have fully justified Nintendo’s talk of appealing to a new audience with the Nintendo DS. In hardware sales the Nintendo DS has again dominated with a market share of 32.46 percent and 29,808 unit sales. The PlayStation 2 was next with a 29.81 percent market share, followed by the PSP (whose highest ranked title is Sony’s Derby Time at number seventeen) with a 26.27 percent share, then the Game Boy Advance with a 8.58 percent share, the GameCube at 2.62 percent and the Xbox at 0.27 percent.
