Sales in Japan have risen above the weekly average, by almost 19 percent, for the first time in several weeks. Sales were led by a new version of Winning Eleven 8 – the best selling soccer simulation that forms the basis for the Pro Evolution Soccer series in Europe. Even though this new title is only a minor update to last year’s version of Winning Eleven 8, with online support being the most notable addition, it still managed to sell 238,293 units. The latest entry in the Wild Arms role-playing series sold 131,380 units, while Touch! Kirby: Mahou no Efude (aka Kirby Canvas Curse) managed a relatively modest 75,365 units – although Kirby titles tend to be long term sellers in Japan, rather than instant hits. The new Kirby title is just one of three new Nintendo DS titles in the top ten this week, with PSP software sales once again failing to make as significant an impact. Indeed, with the launch of two new colors of console, hardware sales for the DS also managed to exceed the PSP for the first time in several months. The Nintendo DS sold 55,825 units for a 34.93 percent market share, followed by 43,043 and a 26.94 percent share for the PSP, 25.28 percent for the PlayStation 2, 9.74 percent for the Game Boy Advance, 2.86 percent for the GameCube and 0.25 percent for the Xbox.
