Sony said today that it plans to integrate a rewritable DVD player into PS2 consoles sold in the Japanese market, and phase out the current PS2 model with its read-only DVD player.
The revamped PS2 will go on sale May 15, and will cost about 25,000 yen -- about 1,000 yen more than before. The new PS2 will read the DVD-R/-RW and DVD+R/+RW formats, but will not support DVD-RAM.
No decision has been made whether to change out the DVD player on PS2s that are sold outside Japan.
