Japanese Hardware: DSi Sales Rise On Continued Dragon Quest IX Popularity

Sales of Nintendo DSi hardware rose more than 17,000 units week-on-week, as Dragon Quest IX commanded the software charts; meanwhile, Xbox 360 sales enjoy a boost.
Sales of Nintendo DSi rose more than 17,000 units week-on-week, as the Square Enix DS RPG Dragon Quest IX topped charts once again. The DSi sold 87,936 units during the week ended August 16, up from the prior week's 70,066, according to Media Create. The tracking firm reported on Thursday that Dragon Quest IX topped charts during the same period, selling 127,000. To date, the game has sold 3.64 million units in Japan. Sales of the older DS Lite were 7,921, bringing total sales of the DS line to 95,857. Wii sales were flat week-on-week, selling 47,732 units. But the sales level for the past two weeks is relatively high, thanks to the release of Capcom's Wii-exclusive Monster Hunter 3. Just prior to that game's release, Wii sales were around 24,000 units per week, and at Monster Hunter launch on August 2, hardware sales jumped to 95,357. Xbox 360 enjoyed a sales bump to 9,162, from the prior week's 5,436. Two Xbox 360 games were in Media Create's weekly top 50: the RPG Magna Carta 2 from Softmax and Gears of War 2 from Microsoft. PSP sales rose week-on-week to 39,882 from 33,893. Below are the rest of the Japanese hardware charts for the week ended August 16: DSi: 87,936 Wii: 47,732 PSP: 39,882 Xbox 360: 9,162 DS Lite: 7,921 PS3: 5,944 PS2: 4,907
