Despite being in its fourth week of sales, Nintendo’s New Super Mario Bros for DS has once again sold over 200,000 units, albeit this time only by a margin of 37 copies, to top the Japanese game sales charts. This gives the game a lifetime total of 1,678,646 in Japan, which combines with the recently announced 25 day total in North America of 500,000 units for a worldwide total of well over 2 million copies. (The game is released in Europe on June 30th.) Other titles in the Japanese charts this week (ending June 18th, 2006) have fared less impressively, although Bandai will be relatively pleased with the 41,135 unit debut of Nintendo DS game Digimon Story. The only other new entry in the top ten is the first PSP entry in the Doko Demo franchise, part of the peculiarly Japanese genre of the “conversation game”. New releases debuting just outside of the top ten include Success’ role-playing title Metal Saga DS at number eleven and Tomy’s Zoids Dash, based on the still popular toy line, at number sixteen. The budget re-release of Capcom’s Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney on the Nintendo DS has also performed well at number fourteen – although all titles outside of the top ten sold less than 17,000 units each. Hardware sales were a little higher compared to last week, with the Nintendo DS at 164,235 units (including a surprisingly high 22,748 for the original hardware – illustrating the still limited stock of the DS Lite in Japan). The PSP sold 24,653 units during the week, the PlayStation 2 managed 20,737, and the Game Boy Advance family of consoles 5,956. The Xbox 360 sold 1,407 units and the GameCube 1,002.
