As Sony’s PSX multimedia device is released in Japan the majority of homegrown analysts have been extremely critical of the DVD recorder / console hybrid. Kazumasa Kubota of Okasan Securities has described the PSX as a “publicity stunt”, while Kazuya Yamamoto of UFJ Tsubasa has claimed that "lowering the specifications of the PSX hurt Sony's image”.
These comments, particularly Yamamoto’s that the PSX has failed to deliver on its promise to be a superior machine to existing DVD recorders, seem somewhat at odds with observed consumer response at various expos and at the machine's price tag – which is demonstrably lower than any vanilla DVD recorder.
